Welcoming Ori - A Free Birth Story

To give birth where I feel safest and most secure is to give birth at home alone, without medical attention/intervention, or the presence of anyone except family. Oscar and I made the decision to "free birth" when we were 20 weeks pregnant with our first daughter. That was over six years ago and the decision to do so is still impacting our lives to this day. Birth is so sacred and profound and it has been life changing to embrace the experience in a way that feels in such alignment with our souls. It has changed us so deeply and more than ever has expanded our trust and faith in ourselves, in the natural process of life, and in the divine that flows through and orchestrates all things. This was our second unassisted pregnancy and third free birth, and there really are no words for how the compounding experiences have changed our family. When Luna was born, only Oscar and I were present. When Gaia was born, my mom was in the house watching Luna but only Oscar and I were in the room during her birth. With Ori, Oscar, Luna and Gaia were all in the room at birth, with my sister and mom joining shortly after. It's a joy to share our experiences here with you all and to plant the seed of empowerment for women, men and families everywhere. There are so many beautiful choices when it comes to birth and you have the power to choose what feels best for you! I hope you enjoy our story. Thank you for following along and being such a sweet part of our journey. We love you!

Labor felt like it was starting for almost a week. Everyone was in such great anticipation of when this baby would really decide to come, the energy of it all was crazy. It was a Tuesday night when I lost some of my mucus plug and had that feeling of really being so close. I was 40 weeks and 5 days pregnant and thought for sure a baby would be with us within a day. Oscar stayed home from work the next day and took care of me while the girls were out with my dad, but labor never picked up. The next day, Thursday, Valentine’s Day. Oscar and I checked in and decided it was a good idea if he went back to work and I had some time home to myself, as labor wasn’t really picking up at all, and we wanted to save as many of his days off as possible.

Around noon I had a feeling things were now getting “really real” as my contractions started showing a rhythmic pattern for the first time, but it was still hard to tell with all the start and stop over the previous few days. I was home alone and wasn’t sure when to tell Oscar to leave work or my mom to bring the girls back over. After making some lunch and feeling things with the same consistency, I felt SURE we’d be having a baby that day or the next. Since it was raining hard and Oscar was an hour away, I called him and told him he should start heading home. I gave my mom an update and waited for things to pick up a bit more and then had my sister/photographer drive up here.

Oscar was home now and it was around 4pm. Contractions were light but consistently coming every 5 minutes. My sister came over and took some photos and helped get the birth tub set up. It’s funny because I told Oscar about a week prior that I didn’t see myself using the tub, which is strange as I’ve always craved being in water with both previous labors. But sure enough, once the tub was all set up and labor started picking up even more, I told him I didn’t want to be in water. Something about it just didn’t feel stable. I craved the ground. I felt like being in a little nest and asked him to set up some blankets and pillows in our room on the floor.

The early stages of true labor gently started over the next few hours. Around 7:30 my mom came over and put the girls to sleep here. Things really started picking up after that and I slipped into the primal birth world. Around 10pm we had my mom and sister come back over, as I thought we were getting close. The plan was for my mom to bring the girls up to our room when the time came for Ori to be born and for my sister to take photos. But things slowed down a bit and I told Oscar to send them back home to rest. I was laboring on the floor on my hands and knees, occasionally getting up to sit on the toilet with the squatty potty under my feet. I kept thinking how grateful I was for the chance to rest between surges and every time I got a break I would lay down and just try to get into a state of sleep.

Contractions were coming every minute or two at this point and with the intensity where you have to grip on to something and breathe deeeep. I kept saying “yes yes yes, more please”, even though it felt so intense, I knew this was bringing my baby to me. I was losing bits of mucus plug with blood now. I started puking and pooping and was feeling close to pushing. At this time I reached that point where I felt so tired and was growing weary of doing this. Those little thoughts came... “How long can this last? I’m so tired. I need to sleep, need this to be done. Can this go on forever? Come on baby.” I knew this was transition. Yes. This is how I KNOW she’s close. “Keep going mama. You’ve got this! There’s no room for complaining when you are honored to usher in life, and it’s almost over” I thought to myself. I laid in Oscar’s lap and his calming and grounding presence reminded me that our baby girl was truly almost here. I gathered my strength and that’s when things took a psychedelic turn.

Fully in the raw birth world now. I’m sitting on the toilet and my eyes are closed, I’m swaying all over with a big surge and am on my toes. I reach down and can feel myself starting to have the slightest bulge. She’s on her way down. I tell Oscar to go get the girls and put them in our bed. He carries them up and also calls my mom and sister to come back over. It’s a few minutes after midnight. I have a few strong surges and try to push with them but it doesn’t feel right. My body is saying no, not yet. I wait to push and continue to breathe through them instead, spiraling the sensation of the contraction down into the earth rather than up through my body. Breathe. Open. Release. Oscar is right there with me being the best support ever, the whole time attentive to my needs and subtle energy. Getting me water, gently touching me, encouraging me with his words, wiping poop. Haha! Best dad doula a girl could ask for.

I get those first few surges where I can’t help but to push and drops of blood start to come out. Yes, yes! My body is bearing down. She’s coming. Oscar gets the girls up out of bed and tells them their sister is going to be born and they all get behind me. I’m on all fours and they are just watching attentively. After 10 minutes or so the girls both tell me they can see the head, even though it wasn’t fully presenting yet, and I just feel so happy we’re so close! My hand is on my yoni and with each surge I feel that bulge expanding, my body and pelvis opening. This is my favorite part, YES, I think. I have two of the biggest most intense contractions I’ve ever experienced during birth and I’m pushing with a strength inside of me I’ve never seen. On the second surge I feel her head and everything inside of me feels such an urge to get her out quickly. I need the strength of being on all fours now and ask Oscar if he’s got her, he says yes.

The whole world is opening. It feels like she’s being pulled out of me and I say “gentle, gentle, don’t pull,” even though I know Oscar would never pull on our baby, the weight of her plus gravity just felt with an intensity I hadn’t experienced previously. Oscar sweetly reminds me that it’s all me. Her body is now half way out and I don’t wait for another contraction, just ride the energy of the previous one and primally bear down and push. I feel her slippery body fly out of me and ahhhhhh!!! The sweet relief. She’s here. Crying and active right away. Amazing color. Perfectly healthy babe. We had totally forgotten to tell my mom and sister to come upstairs and weren’t even sure they were there, it was all a blur, so at this point they walk in and my sister captured some photos and my mom helped with towels, etc for me and the baby. It was so beautiful. All of us there just taking in Ori and waiting for me to birth the placenta.

I never got more contractions or felt an urge to push. We waited almost thirty minutes until I said let’s just do it. I got on all fours and easily pushed the placenta out of me. Oscar prepared it with herbs and salt for our lotus birth and we all just took in Ori. The girls got to eat little celebration chocolates. I was bleeding and felt like showering and for the first time ever, gave our baby over to Oscar right away and went and rinsed myself. I was shaking with adrenaline and euphoria, exhaustion and hunger. My mom made me toast and I got into bed with Oscar and Ori and our girls. After a few minutes of all being together, my mom and sister put the girls to bed and left Oscar and I to take in our new life. We were up until 4am with her just high on oxytocin and the magic of our creation. Feeling such immense gratitude for another beautiful free birth with just family present, for another healthy baby and healthy mama and everything just going smoothly. And in those beautiful moments and in the hours and days to follow, our love multiplied and we solidified as a family of 5.

Wonderful Wild You: A Virtual Women's Retreat!

I’ve spent the past 5 years cultivating a life changing community of sisterhood through social media. It has been an absolute blessing, but nothing compares to the experience of being belly to belly with those we feel a kindred spirit connection with. For this reason, I was recently inspired to create a women’s retreat that would allow us to come together in the flesh to learn and laugh and grow our gifts.

With now having a new baby on the way and me feeling like I need to give birth to this creative baby of an experience sooner rather than later, I’ve decided to create a VIRTUAL retreat, which also will allow for anyone to participate from anywhere in the world! I know many people find it can be challenging to meet the right people at the right time in which they can enter sacred community, which is one of the appeals of online communities. I am so excited to cultivate an experience that touches the heart and soul as closely as possible to a belly to belly experience!

Wonderful Wild You
A 3 day virtual women’s retreat

Who: For the women looking to connect more deeply with the wild nature that flows inside us all and create bonds with her sisters on this same path of remembrance

What: A 3 day virtual retreat consisting of 5 zoom calls (ranging from 1-3 hours each in length) and a facebook group for connecting, supporting and sharing more deeply, along with daily prompts for posting and engaging with the group. Each person will also receive one on one time with me before the event starts, in order to talk about what you specifically are looking to receive out of our time together.

When: Friday - Sunday, Aug. 24-26th, plus a one on one call in the weeks prior

Where: Via a private facebook group and a private zoom room, a video conference room where all participants can be present via video and audio from anywhere in the world

Why: To remember the wild inside of us, to work with her and nurture her, body, mind and spirit. To uncover and move through what is holding us back from the freedom we crave, in order to come into better alignment with the soul path that is beckoning us to explore and expand in our knowledge of ourselves, and what sparks the fire of life within.

Schedule: (All times are Pacific standard time)

Friday night opening zoom 6pm-8pm
Topic - Uncovering the Wonderful Wild You
About: What is our wild? How do we tune in to this innate wisdom that lives inside of us and tune out the noise from the rest of the world? During this call, we will ground in together through meditation and mindfulness practices that will connect us to the natural flow of divine energy that best supports our ability to thrive in life. We will cast our intentions and discuss what it means to live from a place of authentic wild women wisdom and touch lightly on some of the ways we practice this - through our connections to our body, the earth, our sexual nature and our creative womb power.

Saturday morning zoom 7am-8am
Topic - Movement Medicine
About: We will start the morning through practicing movement and vocal expression together. This will be a fun time of activation and releasing stagnant energy which keeps us from our naturally wild flow. These are practices to cherish and use for life!

Saturday afternoon zoom 12pm-3pm
Topic - Nurturing Your Wild
About: With convenient stores filled with shelves of products and makeup and medicine, and packaged food in plastic filled with preservatives, with everyone having an opinion on how you should act and behave in society, HOW do we nurture our wild? In this zoom, we will dive into what it looks like to nurture our physical, emotional and spiritual bodies from the wild women’s perspective. We will cover: folk herbalism 101, where you will learn the basics of making infusions, tinctures and salves. The basics of cooking from home with well-resourced foods, meal prepping and budgeting. Reproductive health, how to love and care for your womb space through holistically minded practices. And lastly, how to nurture your emotional, spiritual and mental self through holistic practices that you can create from home.

Saturday evening zoom 6pm-8pm
Topic - Activating Your Wild
About: Now that we have laid out our intentions, have identified and began to move through our resistance, and have learned to nurture ourselves with radical self love, we are now ready to activate our wild nature! In this zoom, we will open a dialogue around the sacred activation of creative and sexual energy that is inherent to all women. How can we use this energy to nourish ourselves, our families and our creative projects? How do we find fulfillment in these areas when we are bombarded by the activities of daily life such as parenting, work and other responsibilities? During our time together you will learn practical and easy ways to cultivate a lasting relationship with your dynamic womb power and discover what magic she has waiting for you to enjoy.

Sunday morning closing zoom 9am-10am
Topic - Integration and closing circle share
About: During this last hour together we will talk about tips and tools for integrating our experience into the “real” world, resources for continuing this work, and closing out with a grounding meditation and circle share.

Participation: In order to foster the type of environment and create the type of experience that will allow us to go as deeply as possible together, participation is required. There will be daily prompts and playwork assignments, as well as opportunities to share and speak on the zooms. They will all be recorded and available for you to view in the weeks following, however, please come prepared to participate in real time. (If you have special circumstances and still desire to particpate, please message me with info and we can chat!) If this feels new and brings up a bit of nervousness, please know that you will be held in an extremely loving space! The Wonderful Wild You says YES to what makes you excited, yet nervous. :)

Pricing: Early bird special: $137 if you register before August 1st! Register August 1st-15th for $197. Register August 16th-22nd for $217. I am also offering a few scholarships and payment plans for those with special circumstances. Please let me know in your application e-mail if you would like to discuss this as an option, or if there’s a sister you would like to nominate.

To Apply: If you’ve made it this far and are interested in participating, I just want to say how truly grateful I am for the spark of possibility and connection here. I am so excited and honored over the opportunity to spend this time together! If you are ready to say YES to the Wonderful Wild You experience, please e-mail homeinthehive@gmail.com with the following:

1. Name, Age, Location
2. What are you most excited for?
3. What makes you nervous?
4. What are you hoping to gain from this experience?

Payments will be collected through PayPal upon approval of application. Space is limited to 20 participants and applications will be approved in the order they are received. Don’t worry, you’re not being “approved” by what you say in your application, it’s just a process I wanted to put in place so I can get to know all the participants more deeply!

This entire virtual retreat is intended to create a joyful space where we can connect in authentic and raw sisterhood, forming lasting bonds with ourselves and one another. It is my intention to be a flashlight and illuminate the divine wisdom and knowledge that already lives inside of you. Through our time together I hope you will not only learn a TON, but that you will also gain a new sense of confidence in your ability to do and to be whoever is wanting to come forth... That we would discover that Wonderful Wild You, hand in hand.

I love you!

Biggest and warmest of hugs,

Ashley

You're Invited!

Hello beautiful world! It is absolutely an amazing time on our planet right now as we shift into a new season of life. I am enjoying watching the little bit of change in leaf color we get here in Southern California and can feel my spirit embracing this season in a whole new way. Along with the trees, I am also changing my leaves, shedding old skin and preparing to bare it all in the winter. This is a beautiful time of peeling back the layers and as we go through this process it is so important that we nurture our physical vessels that are carrying us through this life.

Many of you have heard me speaking highly of Purium and the superfoods my family has been taking since earlier this year. I know lots of people are wanting to learn more and so I would like to invite all of you to please join me tomorrow morning as we gather to share in the magic of healing superfoods. I will be opening up about my personal story with Purium, talking about the products we love and use daily, answering questions and guiding those who are interested through the process of placing an order. And everyone who attends will receive a code for $50 off their first purchase! If this is all new to you, check out this post to learn a little more.

In addition to sharing about this amazing opportunity to increase your health, I will also be speaking briefly on a simple way in which you can utilize Purium's referral program in order to bring more wealth into your lives as well. It really is a holistic experience on all levels and I am so excited as always to share more tomorrow.

You can join by computer or phone via the info below. If you join by phone, I recommend downloading the Zoom app (it's free) so you can join in the video aspect of the call, which is a really fun element. Please feel free to invite your friends & community that might be interested, too!

The Quest For Self Sustainability

Long before I met Oscar or became a mother, I knew that a non-conventional life was the one for me. During my early teenage years I quickly realized that I had no desire for formal education or a normal 9-5 job. I was people-oriented and artistic and desired a life filled only with things I felt passionate about, including (or should I say, especially) how I would earn income and sustain myself as an adult.

After graduating high school early I pursued many different endeavors that I felt interested in, that would give me skills I could utilize for life and that I saw potential for sustaining myself on. Independence has always been important to me and so I desired to eventually be my own boss. I first became a licensed cosmetologist and started working towards owning a salon. During cosmetology school I worked in sales and retail and at one point my sister and I started a boutique shop in our garage. Then I became a barista and got involved in the health food industry, eventually developing a desire to possibly open my own cafe one day. I developed a deep love for plant medicine and holistic body care and started crafting & selling my products locally. I was always very involved in the local music scene and thought one point about running a venue. I studied photography and my first Etsy shop was for selling prints of my work. I became certified in CPR and started working as a nanny. I moved to Santa Cruz to pursue off grid homesteading. I went back to school to pursue child development with the dream of opening my own homeschooling program. I made a little business creating succulent arrangements. I led urban gardening workshops. Crafted jewelry. Made stencils & did spray paintings onto clothing & canvas bags. Did recycled book binding. And the list goes on!

I share all of this to make one point... This has always been in my heart. I have always been tuned in to the frequency of self sustainability and the desire for it has been long pulsing. When I met Oscar and we started a family there was no question in our minds that this is what we desired for ourselves and our children. The ability to be at home with our girls together and to sustain ourselves off activities we feel passionate about and where we are using the gifts God gave us, this is the heart of our desire.

We were introduced to the more "serious" blogging world during pregnancy with our first daughter and quickly realized that technology and advancements in business models had opened up a whole new world of income producing activities. Our plan was to invest in our etsy shop, blog and  recording music, eventually having those both turn into full time businesses and then get on the road. But as we started seeing we were on our way towards having a full blown business, one that would require all of our time and for us to be settled somewhere in order to run and manage it, we realized how much work and time it took and that it wouldn't easily sustain us on the road. Eventually we would like to settle somewhere and perhaps have some stable business we create, but for now we are interested in traveling with our family and working on our own time, so homesteading and settling isn't really on the table right now. And once it is in our sights, we know we will need a good chunk of money to invest in that endeavor. So we were needing something different.

The concept of residual income first came in like a flash of lightning. It just made so much sense and opened up a whole new way of thinking and possibility. The easiest way I can explain it would be the example of a musician who writes and records a song once and then makes money off that song for as long as it sells. Most people in the world work dollar for hour jobs. You don't work, you don't get paid. Residual income sets things up so that you can make money beyond the dollar for hour and get paid even while you're not actively working. There are a few ways to earn residual income and after we thoroughly researched all of them, it seemed that network marketing was the simplest and most lucrative option. (Network marketing is just a fancy term for sharing with the people you know.)

Oscar went back to work full time when we found out we pregnant with our second daughter and over the next year and a half we spent a lot of time looking into different ways of bringing him back home. It was challenging to run a full on business at home alone with two little ones and it was hard to find time for creative projects and Oscar to work on music. We continued to keep network marketing companies in mind and I continued to be exposed to so many through Instagram. It always felt tempting when I would see these posts where people were with their kids on the beach smiling and telling you to direct message them if you want to work from home and make a ton of money, etc. But I never found a company whose products I felt I could support 100%. I knew the business model was real and legit but it just never felt right. Until I met Sarah.

Sarah and I met on Instagram sometime last year. I was always inspired by her Hawaii dream life and how radiant her and her family were. One day I was feeling extremely desperate for a path to make our dreams of bringing papa home a reality and I felt drawn to Sarah's account. As I scrolled through I landed on every post I needed to that told the most beautiful story of organic superfoods that had healed her family and community and that she was now sharing with others and making a living off of from home. My heart leapt! Not because this was new or foreign, but because it actually felt real and relatable. So genuine and in tune with the energy of my own family. I connected with her immediately that day and started on my journey with Purium a few weeks later.

The heart behind Purium is driven by love, compassion and a desire for health and wealth for ALL. Their mission is essentially the same as that of our own family and it couldn't feel better to be partnering up with them to spread healing and high vibrating food with our community and the world. My family and I have had our lives changed by these products and that gave us the last green light we needed to start sharing with others. I've been doing the "business" with Purium for about three months now and it has developed me as a person in greater ways than I ever could have imagined. It has also shown to have the greatest potential of any endeavor in terms of financial success!

And so now I am ready to build a beautiful team of heart centered individuals, who care about their health and the health of others. I'm looking for women (and men!) who are passionate and motivated, clear and determined to reach their goals. There is so much power in our collective intentions and I am truly seeking to connect deeply with others and make our dreams come true! I will personally be investing my time and energy into helping you build the skills you need to deeply transform your life, your limiting beliefs and start running your own business from home. Together we will work arm in arm to daily manifest our goals. I have seen it happen for so many others and now as I am starting to see it happen in my own life, I want to share the magic! Whether it's to bring your loved ones home, travel more, work less, save up for that vacation, or simply do something for yourself that you love, together we can achieve anything!

If you feel inspired to join me on this new journey, please contact me via Facebook or email homeinthehive@gmail.com. Or click here to learn more. In gratitude, love and light!

Water Kefir & Kefir Soda Tutorial

Did you know that your body contains 10x more bacteria cells than it does human ones? This bacteria is the "good" kind and most of it lives in your digestive system. Keeping this bacteria balanced and happy is one of the main components for maintaining good health and a disease free body. Hippocrates said that "All disease begins in the gut".

In order to have a healthy gut, it must be flourishing with good bacteria. In order for this to occur, we must be feeding it probiotic rich foods and beverages. One of my absolute favorite ways of doing this is through making and drinking water kefir & kefir soda, which you can make at home using water kefir grains.

Water kefir grains are not really grains, but a colony of beneficial bacteria and yeast existing in a symbiotic relationship. They create probiotics and enzymes as they break down the sugar you feed them. This in turn creates a carbonated lacto-fermented beverage which you can drink straight or ferment for a second time with fruit juice or coconut water, which turns it in to a bubbly kefir "soda". The result is a deliciously fizzy and fruity health drink!

Water kefir grains are incredibly easy to use and a new batch of water kefir can be created every 24-48 hours from the grains. My family and I love experimenting with all different types of flavors for our bubbly kefir soda and encourage everyone to give it a try. Safe for kids and pregnant mama, this is an easy, fun and extremely healthy activity for all to enjoy!

You can buy dehydrated water kefir grains online but I always recommend getting them through someone you know, if possible. I also occasionally have them for sale on Instagram!

Once you get your grains, here's how to proceed:

ACTIVATING DEHYDRATED WATER KEFIR GRAINS

1. Heat 4 cups water.
2. Pour into glass jar.
3. Dissolve 1⁄4 cup cane sugar in the water.
4. Cool to room temperature.
5. Empty bag of dehydrated water kefir grains into cooled sugar water.
6. Cover with a coffee filter or cloth secured by a rubber band.
7. Keep at room temperature for 3-5 days.
8. After 5 days grains should be plump and translucent. They are now ready to make water kefir. Strain the sugar water off and discard it.

MAKING WATER KEFIR & KEFIR SODA

1. Heat 4 cups water. To make larger batches, use up to 8 cups water.
2. Pour into glass jar.
3. Dissolve 1⁄4 cup cane sugar per quart (4 cups) of water.
4. Cool to room temperature. Add water kefir grains.
6. Cover with a coffee filter or paper towel secured by a rubber band
7. Keep at room temperature for 24-48 hours.
8. After culturing is complete, prepare a new batch of sugar water, (steps 1-4 above).
9. Use a strainer to separate kefir grains from the finished water kefir.
10. Place kefir grains in the new batch of sugar water.
11. The finished water kefir is now ready to consume or flavor and carbonate through a second ferment. To do this, simply use a mason jar or flip top bottle. Add 1 part fruit juice for every 3 parts kefir water. Apple juice is a great basic. We also enjoy strawberry, cranberry, any berry really :), ginger & lemon and watermelon. So many options to play with! Cover and leave on the counter for 3 days then refrigerate and consume within one week.

Have fun and don't be afraid to experiment with your flavors! Hope you all enjoy this delicious and nourishing beverage. With love from the hive!

Creamy Almond Butter Salad Dressing, Dipping Sauce & Marinade // Vegan Recipe

This is our family's favorite dressing (dip, marinade, everything!) and I make a big batch of it every week. It's so yummy we usually enjoy it on salads, as a stir fry sauce, spring roll dip, marinade for tempeh or tofu, you name it! It tastes great with just about anything and you can experiment with the ratios to make it thicker or more watery, depending on your preference for texture and zing.

To make this simple yet delicious sauce, simply whisk or blend together:

The juice of one lemon, equal parts tamari (can substitute for bragg's liquid aminos), and water (so, same amounts of lemon, water & tamari), a big tablespoon almond butter, a few pinches of garlic powder, and a dash of maple syrup. Increase amounts of everything for bigger batches.

Hope you enjoy sweet friends! Be sure to let us know if you try it. :)

Welcome Back! // Sakura Bloom Giveaway

Hello friends! It's been two years since a post has been made here. Many factors have contributed to my lack of blogging ~ being a new parent, investing more time on Instagram, but most of all it just comes down to ideas. Ideas that I created that have blocked my blogging flow. Not being satisfied with the layout, feeling that I needed to re-do everything, have a professional logo, fancy new family photos, make it better, make it more, and on it goes.

How often do we limit ourselves as a result of our beliefs? I know I've done this a lot in my life and when I see the opportunity to expand in this area, I want to take it! This blog is the perfect platform for me to practice this expansion. I've spent the past two years talking about how I'll get back to blogging as soon as _______ (fill in the blank with a laundry list of excuses). Well, a few weeks ago I realized that this excuse making had to stop and that if the desire to share through here was there, that's all I needed!

Yes, this space is in need of an update and I would love to give it a fancy makeover. But none of that needs to stop me from starting to share from here again. And so here we are! Exactly two years since our last post. And boy does it make me want to celebrate! There's so much I want to say and share and I'm excited for this new start. In honor of this rebirth, I've partnered up with a company that truly changed my life in order to bring you all a celebration giveaway!

We discovered Sakura Bloom when I was pregnant with our first daughter. Through their company we were introduced to the world of baby wearing, breastfeeding and to an online community of mom's that was unlike anything I had experienced in my years of online activity. The support and friendships that we gained through this company and by participing in The Sling Diaries were monumental. Not only in my life as a mother but also as a family with a passion to reach the masses with a message of love and positivity.

Baby (and toddler) wearing has been such an integral part of our journey and I'm so happy to be able to spread that joy. We've been wearing our girls in these slings since Luna was three months old, and she still asks to be worn in them! It's one of our favorite ways to connect, soothe fussiness, be mobile with them and hands free.

And now to spread the love! For a chance to receive one of these amazing slings for your family, simply leave a comment below and include your Instagram name (if applicable). The winner will be able to choose any silk or linen sling from Sakura Bloom. For extra entries, visit our Instagram feed and follow the instructions there. Winner will be announced on Friday, 4/29. We hope you enjoy, sweet friends!

With lots of love,

Ashley and the Castro family

The Sling Diaries, Vol. IV // Everything Shines: Adventure

"I'd like to repeat the advice that I gave you before, in that I think you really should make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun." - Jon Krakauer, Into The Wild

To us, life is either a grand adventure or nothing at all. We feel called to the outskirts, to the daring, to the roads less traveled and walked upon. Something inside of us beckons to be awakened, to see the sun and trees anew each day. Through seeking adventure, the sleepy soul currents within our body fade and we find ourselves alert and awake, experiencing life in our most vibrant state. Adventure is defined as an unusual or exciting, typically hazardous, experience or event. With confidence I can say that every life-defining moment has come after the willingness to dive into the great lake of unknown, where the heart can soar and burst free into something we could not have foreseen. Whether it has been through how we chose to bring Luna into this world, or how we continually choose to pave our own way in parental society, or how we have abandoned the status quo in terms of spirituality, health and economy; our family has been formed from one adventure to the next, and we hope for this to never change!

Adventure is where the soul takes shape. It brings out a richness in life that no amount of security or comfort can replace. As parents we are given the most exciting and vital opportunity for influencing a life, and it doesn't matter what we say to our children, it's what we do that will make the most impact. Luna will look to us and follow our lead in action, and it's for this reason that we are seeking adventure! In doing so, we hope she will come to feel vibrant and awake, comfortable in her own skin, her spirit and her path. To question everything brought before her, to go boldly where her spirit calls, and to listen ultimately to her heart, especially in those times when it speaks in a different tone than most. As individuals and together as one, Oscar and I are looking to abandon our false senses of security and to truly live in adventure. To not hold back, to go for the daring, the courageous, the brave. And to teach Luna to do the same.

We know the road ahead will always be an adventure with you, our sweet little moon! We are grateful and humbled for this opportunity to walk the green earth together, to witness the bright sky, purple flowers in bloom. To experience love, the unusual and exciting, hazardous and wonderful, adventure called life! Thank you Sakura Bloom for this wonderful opportunity to reflect and document over the past six months. Being a part of the Sling Diaries has shaped my first year as a mother in such a special way. We are grateful to all of those who have followed along and helped shape our journey. May the adventure continue infinitely!
