Sakura Bloom // The Sling Diaries

One of our favorite and most useful items to have as parents is our Sakura Bloom ring sling. This company has not only created an awesome product, but an awesome community as well! The Sling Diaries is a photo-documentary project they started that focuses on the art of babywearing. Fifteen families will be chosen to participate in the upcoming series and we have applied! Submissions required 3 of your favorite babywearing photos, along with a written paragraph on the theme of curiosity. This writing "assignment" was so fun! And my little sister of course did an AMAZING job as always, snapping some photos for us in her backyard, capturing our hearts and memories.

Here are some of my favorites from the day, and you can read my thoughts on curiosity below. Regardless of whether our family is chosen, I'm excited for a new series to start and for the opportunity to participate! You can follow along here if you're interested. Thank you again to Sakura Bloom and all the babywearing families out there making this type of project possible! Enjoy and may your hearts be filled with babywearing love!

If curiosity killed the cat, then I wish to die again and again. I am curious to live, curious to breathe, to plant and grow seeds, to climb and swing from trees. I am curious to learn why the nightingale sings and to study the pattern of cicada wings. I am curious to touch the bottoms of seas and feel my feet on sun-kissed mountain peaks. I am curious over new moons, ripe fruits, and the chance to raise a home. I am brimming full of curiosity to hear the sound of my child’s laughter and witness with what delicacy her beautiful limbs will grow. I am curious to see what differences I can make through the ways I love and mother and create. I want to know it all: Head back, arms thrown wide open, embracing every question, turning over all the rocks. Curiosity fans the flame of our creative fires; it is our life blood, the will to live each day anew, revealing the depths of our human spirit, our desire to understand, to connect, to belong. It is one of the first, most basic and most essential emotions one has. When Luna came into this world three months ago, so also was born in Oscar and I a spirit of newfound curiosity. I am gifted daily to discover a new heaven and a new earth through her eyes, watching as she takes in all there is to know with a curiosity found only in those who are humble enough to recognize the great beauty and wonder that lies, not just within themselves, but in the world around them. Wearing my little moon close to me, we are able to follow our curiosities into endless adventure, together discovering the magic as one, heart-to-heart as we grow in love for one another and for the magical spaces we call home.

Echo Lake: A Family Adventure

Summer is officially over and we are easing our way into this new season with curried soups and pumpkin spice lattes. I love this time of year! Being part of an earth that changes as we cycle round the sun, I see how our bodies reflect the varying seasons and their distinguished qualities. With long and lazy summer gone, I feel invigorated by the crisp air and enlightened by a new sense of creativity. Inspiration abounds!

There are a lot of great things in store for us this season, we know. New opportunities for work, a space to call home, a family business, all of these things and more we are striving for! With great joy and an unfaltering belief in limitless possibility, we know these things will be ours.

In the meantime, won't you bask with us in the glory of summer and the amazing photography skills of my little sis! These are from a trip we took to the cabin at Echo Lake, built by my great-grandfather in 1939. My mom spent all of her time there during the summer as a kid, and when that carried on with us kids, I always dreamed of taking my own family there someday. My dream came true when Luna was 4 weeks old, and it is only because of Oscar losing his job that we were able to go. We continue to believe that has been the biggest blessing we could receive!

There are lots more on the cjeanphotography blog! Head on over and hope you enjoy. May this new season find you happy and blessed.

Luna's Lotus Birth

Hello and happy Friday! Today I want to pick up where our last post left off and share with you the wonderful experience that Lotus Birth was for our family.

*For those who are not familiar with Lotus Birth, you can read all about why we decided on it and how we prepared for it here.

Sleeping as a family for the first time after Luna arrived was pure bliss. So much anticipation and energy had been built up around this phenomenal event and now that it was over and we were transitioning into a new phase of existence as parents, it just felt so pure and necessary to rest in this space between. During those hours of sleep it was as if the whole Universe was suspended in time and life pulsed only to the rhythm of our three hearts. It was truly Divine.

After a few hours had gone by and we were feeling our strength restored, we got up and rinsed the placenta that had been lying in a bowl next to Luna, let it dry a bit in a colander lined with cloth, then placed it on fresh cloths in a bamboo steamer and covered it in a herb blend of lavender, rosemary, rose petals and salt, topped with dried sage leaves. It was a little tricky doing all of this as we had to balance Luna and the placenta while protecting her cord from being pulled during the process. We brought a chair right next to the bath tub and I sat there nursing Luna while Oscar took care of everything from the edge of the tub. It really wasn't as difficult to manage as some thought it might be and my fear of disturbing Luna or her cord was quickly calmed after seeing how hard she would pull on it with her own hands! It was a beautifully strong connection they shared.

A few weeks before her birth Oscar had hung fabrics from the ceiling to surround our bed and create a cozy place for us to spend our "babymoon". We were intent on giving her the most gentle transition from womb to world and this space was perfect for that. Luna was incredibly peaceful while attached to her placenta, sleeping almost all the time and hardly ever opening her eyes. We nursed and slept and changed the herbs and cloth on the placenta every day. We put drops of an Echinacea tincture around her belly button to ensure no infection and to encourage drying. The cord became hard and brittle within a day and we continually rotated which side of her the bamboo basket would lay on to be sure it received proper circulation and didn't harden to one side. Luna stayed put in our bed until gently detaching from her cord on the fourth night, after which time we got her up and exposed to more light, eventually taking her out and into the world five days after her birth.

After letting go of the cord Luna started becoming more alert and wakeful but she maintained this beautiful sense of calm and peace to her being. It is something we still see in her now and believe will be a part of her spirit eternally, this gentle and grounded demeanor. Today she is eight weeks old and couldn't be happier. She adapts easily to her surroundings, is not bothered by light or noise, she raises her voice only to communicate specific needs and calms as soon as they're met. She sleeps like it's her job (including champing it through two out-of-state road trips without a single fuss!), constantly smiles, and feels comfortable in any loving arms. I know a lot of people would say this is all just a coincidence, but we don't believe in coincidences! All of our thoughts and intentions manifest themselves one way or another in our realities. And while we can't take all the credit because there is definitely a plan that is higher than ours and things could have turned out differently, we truly believe that our gentle birth was a physical, emotional, and most importantly spiritual gift to Luna, and that you can see the resonance of this in her beautiful being. We are so blessed by her wonderful presence here and we want to thank everyone again who supported us during this time. It could not have been more special or perfect! We feel so complete.

Here are some photos from during this time! They obviously are not of the best quality since photo taking was not a high priority, but we wanted to share a little bit of our special memories. Hope you enjoy and make it a great weekend! Also, if anyone has any questions about our birth or natural Lotus Birth in general, please don't hesitate to reach out to us through email. We are always happy to chat and provide feedback!

*Placenta pictures to follow! Just a heads up for those who are not interested in seeing that type of thing.

Unassisted Home Birth

Hello everyone! I'm so excited to be sharing with you again after a long break from updating on here. We have been relaxing and hibernating in our babymoon cocoon with the most precious little moon of all time... That's right! Our little Luna Cove has arrived! We are SO blessed and blown away by her presence. She has overtaken us with gratitude and love since the day she was born. On July 5th, 2013, at 6:50am, Oscar and I received our daughter into our hands after 28 hours of unassisted labor. I gave birth standing up, in our bathroom, and it was the most powerfully joyful experience of our entire lives!

For the two weeks leading up to Luna's birth I felt I would be going into labor anytime. I had powerful contractions during those days and had lost all of my mucus plug a week before she came. It was a crazy time of emotion and energy. I did a lot of walking and praying, nesting and sleeping, doing all I could to focus my intention on releasing expectations and trusting in my body to know what to do during birth. Trusting also in Luna to be born in her perfect timing and way, and for the Divine to guide the entire process in whatever direction it was meant to go.

My water broke at 3am on July 4th. I got up for some towels to put down on the bed and woke up Oscar to let him know we were going to be having a baby soon. He replied "Awesome!" and went back to bed, knowing it would still be some time before things picked up. I was so excited for such a sure sign of labor, and contractions were light but starting to take place rather regularly, that it was difficult for me to go back to sleep. Around 6am I got up and made some tea and started doing the dishes. Oscar got up shortly after and checked in with me on how I was feeling. I was excited and felt certain we'd be having a baby that day. He mentioned feeling she wouldn't be born until the next day, to which I responded by starting to cry, wanting so badly for her to come that day. Oscar saw how I reacted and didn't mention it again, but later when we talked, he expressed knowing the whole time that labor was going to be a lot longer than I was expecting. Looking back, I see that this was the only expectation I had allowed myself to hold on to, that labor would be a short process.

After showering and having a light breakfast we took Francois on a nice long walk and spent the rest of the morning and afternoon resting and relaxing. Around 3pm I started feeling a little antsy and wanted to get out of the apartment, so we headed to a deli in our neighborhood for sandwiches and frozen yogurt. It was exciting and strange to be out in public while in labor. While we were eating I started timing my contractions, since at this point I was needing to breathe through them and they were definitely feeling stronger than they had all day. They were about 4 minutes apart and lasting an average of 35 seconds. In my mind, this was again a sure sign that "real" labor was close, and so I talked to Oscar about preparing the tub and our supplies when we got home, feeling sure we'd be having a baby before midnight!

We had decided during our pregnancy that we really wanted to approach every aspect of the process from an intuitive, spirit-based point of view. For us this meant not relying on outside medical assistance during our pregnancy and birth, and for that reason we desired to have Luna without anyone present but Oscar and myself. We invested a lot of time and energy into manifesting what that would look like and part of it was deciding that we wouldn't check for dilation or effacement during labor, really wanting to just give in to the natural flow and release whatever control our brains might want to have over the situation. I justified timing contractions with the idea that it would be how we would know when to start getting the tub ready, based on something I had read about it. That really played in to the only frustration I felt during labor, that things were taking so much longer than I had thought they would. Definitely next time I will not be timing or tracking anything during the birthing process! A lesson I am happy to have learned.

I did my best to rest while Oscar inflated the tub, filled it with water, and set up our candles and music. It was around 7pm and I timed a few contractions again. This time they were coming every 2-3 minutes and lasting closer to a minute. Oscar and I got into the tub together and it was so nice and relieving to float in the warmth. The water was wonderful but it really did seem to slow things down, or it might be that I just got in too early. Either way, after a few hours had gone by I was starting to feel tired and a little frustrated that labor hadn't picked up yet. At this point Oscar was lying down in the other room and he came in to check on me, around 9pm. I was feeling ready to do something different in hopes of moving things along, and he expressed having a craving for raw chocolate and wondered if maybe running a little errand could be helpful. I agreed and got out of the tub and ready to go, wondering out loud if we would be that crazy couple who delivers their baby in the grocery store parking lot!

We kind of forgot it was the Fourth of July and that most stores were closed or had closed early that day, so we drove around for a bit before finding a store that was open. By the time we got there I was needing to stay in the car because of how strong contractions were starting to come on. I breathed and held on to the seat through five strong surges during the 10 or 15 minutes Oscar was in the store. He asked if I felt up to making one more stop, at a little coffee shop for a cup of chai tea, and I agreed no problem. After driving the few blocks it took to get there, though, it was a different story. I told Oscar we needed to get back home right away as things were feeling much more intense, and so we made our way back to the apartment. We returned to our neighborhood to find it full of parked cars and people sitting on their roofs and balconies, waiting to watch the fireworks display over the bay. It was crazy! There was no parking anywhere near our apartment and Oscar had to drop me off so I could get inside and back into the soothing water while he searched for a spot. It must have taken him at least 15-20 minutes to return and as I labored in the tub waiting for him, I imagined how funny/crazy it would be if our baby was born while he was finding parking.

The level of intensity that labor went into at this point truly made me realize how mildly things had been going all day. It was shocking and amazing to feel those first few surges that sent me into a trance-like state. I felt instantly the need to be on my hands and knees, and that's mostly how I labored for the next eight hours, moving from the birth tub in the living room, to the tub in the bathroom, to sitting on the toilet, to the bed, to the floor. It's difficult to describe or recall this part with great detail. It truly is being in the most raw form of your physical self, completely tapped in to your wild animal spirit. I remember reminding myself over and over again to trust and to breathe, and that each surge was bringing our baby closer to us.

During this time Oscar was mostly resting in our bed and offering help or support whenever I asked or he sensed I needed. Usually I just wanted water or fruit or for him to hold my hands and be with me for a minute. At one point I threw up and thought I might be in transition but I felt no urge to push. (Sure enough it was not a sign of transition as I ended up being sick for the rest of the labor, throwing up another 3 or 4 times before she was born!) This question of transition gave me the desire to check the time and I looked to realize it had been almost 24 hours since my water broke, typically the point at which labor would be induced for "failure" to progress. I did my best to not allow this to cause me anxiety, reminding myself that those thoughts were just based on things I had read, not on the actual experience I was having, and to really keep myself focused on the present moment. Despite my not being able to keep food or liquids down, I felt a supernatural strength running through my body. I also felt Luna and knew that she was safe and happy, making her way in perfect timing.

Realizing I might never feel the urge to push, I got into the birth tub and decided to just try pushing with a few contractions. It felt good, but not like I really needed to be doing it, so I just continued to allow the surges to do their work while I did my best to relax and breathe. I slowly started feeling the desire to push, and eventually I couldn't not push, but there was never a clear time when a true urge to do so came. I had probably been pushing for about an hour when I started to feel a little "loopy" and was honestly wondering if labor could go on forever. I didn't feel panicked but there was this part of me that really believed I was eternally going to be in this state. I was back in the bathtub at this point and I called Oscar into the bathroom and asked, rather seriously, "This can't last forever, right?" To which he gave a big smile and responded "Of course not, nothing lasts forever!" I laughed, knowing it was silly, but the encouragement and affirmation was truly a gift and afterward I was able to fully regain my sense of calm and presence.

Dawn was just starting to break and the sky turn blue when my surges really picked up. These waves of energy felt so different, so much more powerful from what I had been experiencing, I knew that she was starting to really make her way down. At some point my surges started bringing out blood and mucus and I just assumed it was a good thing, feeling so incredibly thankful that something seemed to be "happening". By now I had been pushing for almost three hours! Suddenly I felt the need to get out of the water, desiring to feel more grounded into the earth, as contractions were so strong and it felt good to push into the floor. I never felt the urge to be loud, just lots of deep sounds, repeating mantras and breathing. Focusing on these elements really kept me centered and this was especially helpful during the last hours of labor. After some time had gone by I felt ready to get back in the water and asked Oscar if he would take care of getting the birth tub ready again, since by this time the water had cooled down. He set off to start dumping out buckets of cold water while I continued to labor, squatting over and holding onto the toilet.

Just as Oscar announced from the other room that he was finished and the tub was ready for me, I had a contraction that made me jump up to my feet in reaction to the amount of pressure I felt it push down inside of me. I stood there unable to move and called to Oscar that he had better come in there instead. By the time he walked the ten steps from the living room to our bathroom, I had another surge that brought just the tip of Luna's head out. I reached down and felt the soft squish of wet hair and my heart almost exploded with excitement. This was the moment we had been waiting for! Almost immediately I felt the urge to push again, and with another contraction, I eased her head out of me. Nothing has ever felt more gratifying in my entire life! It was like an explosion of light and energy shooting down from the top of my head, into every cell, illuminating my being. The release of pressure was so great I felt my entire body wanting to collapse around it. We both reached down and felt her head, the curve of little ears and nose. It was so fantastic, there truly aren't words to describe the ecstasy of this moment. We just stood there, amazed, knowing I would push the rest of her out of me with the next surge. It came just a few seconds later and sure enough, with one last push, she slipped into our arms.

I sat down on the toilet and Oscar lifted her to my chest. She opened her eyes right away and gave one little cry and that was it! She immediately started breathing on her own and looking around, taking it all in. I'll never forget looking into Oscar's eyes and the feeling of love that was between us in that moment. We had brought life into this world and we had done so in the way we felt called to. Nothing had ever felt more satisfying than that! A minute or two after she was born, Oscar went to check the time and grab blankets and a bowl from the kitchen. It was 6:52am and I easily delivered the placenta while squatting over the bowl, maybe ten minutes later. We cleaned up Luna and myself as much as we needed for the time being and the three of us got into bed. It was SO great to finally rest after nearly 28 hours of labor and even greater to be with my new little family after a lifetime of dreaming what that would be like.

We had an amazing time falling in love during the hours following her birth, forgetting completely about the length of time it took for her to make her entrance into this world, or about our fabulous lack of sleep. It was beyond words a sacred experience that was made even more special to us by how we chose to approach her transition from womb to world. Desiring to give her the most gentle entrance into this new realm, we decided on not cutting the umbilical cord, leaving it to naturally detach in its own time. This Lotus Birth experience was truly amazing. We have already been able to witness how it has nurtured a very peaceful nature within her. I look forward to sharing the details of that with you in our next post!

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and thank you SO MUCH to everyone who offered love and support during our pregnancy and birth. It was wonderful to discover such an amazing community online and our hearts are filled with gratitude for all of you reading this, whether near or far.

Love,

Oscar, Ashley, Luna & Francois

Preparing For An Unassisted Home Water Birth

I want to start off this post by saying there is really only one thing you need to birth at home, in a hospital or birth center, unassisted or attended, and that is a pregnant woman in labor! While it is so beneficial to be prepared as possible, we think it is important for all women to grasp this very foundational concept, that your body was designed for carrying life and giving birth in the most natural and instinctual way, without help or intervention! Now, that doesn't mean you can't ask for assistance or have people attending your births, for whatever resonates with where your family is at will be what is best for that birth experience; it simply means you understand the significance of the innate ability you possess within your Divine female form to carry life and give birth.

Because we are choosing to birth at home without assistance, and because this is our first pregnancy, I felt inclined to spend a lot of time educating myself on the more ancient practices and traditions of birth. I will be thankful to not have to do that again in future pregnancies! It truly was an investment of time and energy that I believe could be made so much simpler if we would allow these "old ways" to become common and normal practices amongst women and their communities once again. There is so much medicine in our bodies and in the earth! It is amazing how well we have been provided for by the Creator of this Universe. With that being said, I want to make clear once again that all of these birth supplies are truly accommodations, and none of them should be considered necessary for birth. It was simply a blessing and a gift to be able to put together so many nice things for bringing in our sweet babe! So without further delay, I present to you... our unassisted home water birth supplies!

First I'll start off with the tub we chose. There are so many birth tubs out there with options for buying and renting, and they can get pretty expensive. After really looking in to the benefits of a "real" birthing pool and getting feedback from a lot of home birthing families, we decided to buy an inflatable kiddie pool that is perfectly suited for birth and comes highly recommended in the water birthing community! You can view the one we purchased here.

To inflate the tub we bought an electric pump. We tested it out and it only takes about seven minutes to  fill! For getting water in the tub, we purchased tap adapters that connect a drinking grade water hose to the bathroom sink. I know some people just use a regular garden hose, but we felt it was important to spend the few extra dollars it cost to be sure there was no lead or other toxins leached through a regular hose.

We purchased a few shower curtains and flannel-backed table cloths to lay down on the floor under and around the tub, as well as for on the couch and the bed, in case I want to move around during birth. I've heard you can never have enough towels, so we have about a dozen of those for keeping dry, as well as half a dozen receiving blankets and washcloths for Luna.

I've put together a pretty extensive collection of herbs & oils for during and after birth. It has always been a dream of mine to open a shop for handcrafted herbal wellness products and other goods related to conscious living. Oscar and I have been expanding and manifesting this dream through Home In The Hive, and we have spent the past few months tossing around ideas for launching a shop. With all of the encouragement and support we've been getting lately, we really felt inspired to not wait for things to be "perfect" and to just start moving boldly in the direction of our dreams! There is a lot of work we want to do and we have so many ideas for what we'll be selling, but I'm very excited to announce that you can purchase a handful of these products below through our newly-opened Etsy shop!

These are the essential oils and liquid herbal extracts I wanted to have handy. An immunity tonic throat spray, two synergy blends for clearing the airways & promoting free, steady breathing, lavender for calming & relaxation, tea tree for assisting in cleansing the umbilical cord or placenta if necessary. American Ginseng & Ginger are both physical & mental energy stimulators, Echinacea is the herbalists' antibiotic and can serve a multitude of purposes during and after birth, including clearing up systemic infections, mastitis, fevers, as well as it can be used on the umbilical cord to prevent any risk of infection, Passionflower is a natural remedy for hypertension.

Castor oil is for inducing or speeding up labor, if we really were to feel that was necessary. Lanolin oil is an incredible moisturizer that helps prepare the nipples for breastfeeding. Vitamin E oil is also soothing to the nipples, as well as it helps promote scar-free healing and can be used for perineum tears after they have closed.

Dr. Bronner's unscented soap and aloe vera gel for cleaning Luna & myself. If you haven't used Dr. Bronner's, we're pretty obsessed and convinced its the best soap, if you're into soap!

I had lots of fun making these herbal blends! I've been creating body products for years now, but never for pregnancy. Diving into this new realm was such a treat!

The after birth bath tea is a blend of lavender, comfrey, rose petal, yarrow flower, lemon balm, chamomile, calendula, and goldenseal. The labor & after birth tea contains raspberry leaf, hibiscus flower, chamomile, alfalfa, lemon balm, wild cramp bark, motherwort, and nettle. Both of these blends, along with a more detailed description, are available for purchase through our Etsy shop! The placenta blend is for our Lotus Birth, which I wrote about here.

I've heard it's amazing to have something cold & soothing to sit on in the days and weeks following birth, so I prepared pads, or "padsicles", for helping out with that! I was gifted a wonderful after birth healing spray from another mama that I used on the pads (just a light misting) before putting them in bags in the freezer. The spray is a blend of witch hazel, aloe, and lavender essential oil. (Thank you, Lauren!) In case of any minor tearing, I made a slippery elm & comfrey salve, which work like nature's knitting needles! Both the salve and a similar spray are available in our Etsy shop.

The smaller jars are filled with some very powerful Chinese herbs to assist with healing and rejuvenating after giving birth. They were also gifted from a very kind mama. (Thank you, Tiffany!) The blend consists of dang gui, chuan xiong, tao ren, pao jiang, zhi gan cao, and yi mu cao.

In case we need any references during or after labor, I have my notebook compiled of research, an extensive guide to herbal remedies, and the best book I've found so far on educating a person for having a natural birth. We'll also have plenty of good snacks and beverages, candles, music, sage and whatever else we decide for creating the setting we feel inclined towards.

I really want to stress again the importance of internally preparing for birth taking a much higher priority over all the external preparations one can do. I've already given you so much information to digest that I will just end on that note for now, and will likely dedicate a future post to the inward preparation a natural home birth requires. In the meantime, I hope this post has been beneficial to you and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions! We wish you a wonderful weekend and blessings to everyone currently preparing for an upcoming birth. May you find all the strength and wisdom you desire during this sacred time. Be sure to let us know what you think about the goodies in our Etsy shop and be on the look out for a lot more coming soon!

Love & Light,

Ashley, Oscar, Luna & Francois
