Unassisted Birth: Prenatal Care

We get a lot of questions about how prenatal care is handled when birthing without assistance, and I realized it's something I didn't mention in our last post about Luna's birth day, so I wanted to take the time to address that topic now. Choosing a freebirth really does give you just that... freedom! To pick and choose every step and action along the way that resonates with your intuition and spirit. Some women choose to see an ob/gyn or midwife and some choose to do their own prenatal care. Some choose to participate in ultrasounds and tests, while others don't. The field of obstetrics has created an in-depth system for monitoring women and their womb during gestation, and many people take comfort in this type of care, still choosing to receive some or all of it. Others may choose an entirely uninterrupted pregnancy and birth, relying solely on their own intuition and connection to their babies and bodies to detect any problems; ideally developing the peace of mind that all is well and meant to be in the course of pregnancy.

This journey has consisted of both realms for us. When we had planned to birth at a center close to our home, our prenatal care was being handled there. I went for the initial blood-work/full health history checkup, one standard measure-your-belly-and-blood-pressure checkup, and received one ultrasound at the twenty-week mark. Although I am happy for the choices we made at the time, both Oscar and I agree it's not something we would choose again in the future, since we have fully come to the side of wanting to connect with this process in its most natural form. Our now at-home prenatal care consists of a healthy diet, lots of walking and yoga, meditation, sleeping whenever needed, and just generally loving on the mind/body/spirit in all the ways we can! I've checked my blood pressure twice at the grocery store, but that was mostly for fun/myself and not something I felt necessary for Luna's wellbeing.

It has been such a special opportunity to rely on our faith during this time, connecting with the Divine and our Little Moon in ways we never thought possible. The road has definitely been one of perseverance and trust, worth every step of growth along the way. And now, in just a few short weeks, Luna will be joining us! The earth is truly alive with magic and light!

    1. Thank you so much. It comes from a deeply cultivated faith that we were created to have these abilities naturally! <3

  2. I wish I had been as confident with my 1st and 2nd. I am way more confident now and when we have a 3rd I am planning for a homebirth! Can't wait to see pictures of your sweet little Luna.

  3. Found your blog when you liked a few of my pictures on instagram and I'm so happy I did! We are using a midwife at a birthing center for our first baby and had the typical 20 week ultrasound. They came and told us they found a bright bowel which was a marker for a bunch of crazy things and that we needed to speak with a specialist but that most likely it was nothing. Needless to say that after two more ultrasounds with a specialists it was nothing. We've decided that for all of our future pregnancies we will not be doing any ultrasounds or testings - there are so many little things that usually mean nothing and it totally stressed me out for no reason which is worse for the baby. So impressed and inspired that you are having an unattended home birth!

    1. Hi Shannon! So glad I found you and that you found us. It's always a great time to connect with likeminded individuals, but especially during this amazing time of pregnancy! It sounds like what you went through with the ultrasound was exactly what you needed to launch you into a new place of consciousness, and that is such a beautiful experience! Love what you said about the stress being worse for the baby. I feel the same is true for birth, which is why unassisted birthing works best for us! I know it will the least stressful environment for me and Luna. :)

Thanks again for reaching out! Hope you're having a great week and lots of blessings to you during this time!

  4. Hi. We just found out we are pregnant with our 4th child, due May 25th. Our first was born in a hospital to a midwife with an epidural. Second was born in a birthing center, all natural, to a midwife. Third, prenatal care was through a midwife, but we chose to have an unassisted homebirth, which turned out lovely. This time around, I'm planning to do my own prenatal care, as well as another unassisted homebirth. So glad I found your blog!

  7. hey! I love reading your blog.. you and your beautiful family really are an inspiration. Last year my husband and i were pregnant and then found out at my first ultrasound @ 14 weeks the baby had no heartbeat. I had just moved to the USA and so my mind was all over the place. I was sent for a D&C to have the fetus removed. A couple months later I started having complications and after multiple tests and ultrasounds I was rushed back to hospital to have a repeat D&C as there was still remaining tissue. The whole process went on for 6 months. It was awful.
Well, we just found out that we are expecting again. I am extremely nervous and anxious. I have been practicing yoga and have recently Incorporated meditation into my routine to try and calm my nerves (i really don't want anything to happen again). After discussing it with my husband we are leaning towards an all natural home birth. After everything that happened last year, i don't think i can face any more hospitals and drs. We are possibly looking into a Midwife too and I am doing my research on pre natal care. Although I would love to go unassisted 100% - i just dont know if i would get the peace of mind i need after everything that happened and so think i would be doing myself more harm than good. Any advice? Sorry for the long post! Peace Love and Light and thankyou again!

  8. It seems like prenatal care is super important. A doctor would be able to answer any questions you may have. My aunt got super excited when she found out that she was having a girl. Then she could finally start thinking of names for her baby. http://www.obgynmedicalgroup.com/Obstetrics-Services-Infertility-Treatments-Whittier-CA.html
